The Quoted Coffee – Chapter 1

The Quoted Coffee – Chapter 1

Coffee quotes often make us smile or think about our lives in a new light. No matter how the phrases are turned, when coffee inspires them it is almost certain that everyone can find a nugget of personal truth behind the intended meaning, or beyond it. Coffee quotes range from purely whimsical to historical and philosophical. Most of all, they reflect our lives back to us.

In essence, coffee quotes inform us about our relationship with coffee, and sometimes about its impact on history. These words, spoken by historical figures, actors, authors and various other observers, bring to life the importance of the bean in witty, well-grounded (could not help the pun) sentences.

We’ve captured a few favorites and set them aside. Today, these will be the centerpiece for our weekly journey into the realm of coffee. In fact, we think this may be the first in a tasty little series of coffee inspired quotes, and this is why we added, “chapter 1” to our title. Make a fresh cup. Enjoy. Ponder.

“We want to do a lot of stuff; we’re not in great shape. We didn’t get a good night’s sleep. We’re a little depressed. Coffee solves all these problems in one delightful little cup.” ~ Comedian Jerry Seinfeld

“The powers of a man’s mind are directly proportional to the quantity of coffee he drank.” ~ Scottish politician and historian Sir James MacKintosh

“That’s something that annoys the hell out of me—I mean if somebody says the coffee’s all ready and it isn’t.” ~ American Novelist J. D. Salinger

“Coffee is a social binder, a warmer of tongues, a soberer of minds, a stimulant of wit, a foiler of sleep if you want it so. From roadside mug to the classic demi-tasse, it is the perfect democrat.” ~ New York Times, 1949

“Coffee is a lot more than just a drink; it’s something happening. Not as in hip, but like an event, a place to be, but not like a location, but like somewhere within yourself. It gives you time, but not actual hours or minutes, but a chance to be, like be yourself, and have a second cup.” ~ America novelist Gertrude Stein

“Just around the corner, there’s a rainbow in the sky. So let’s have another cup o’coffee, and let’s have another piece o’ pie.” ~ American composer Irving Berlin, 1932

“Professor Prescott speaks of the influence of coffee as a beneficent exhilaration and as tending to increase the power to the muscular work as well as the power of concentration in mental effort… The function of coffee in bringing serene delight is an important one.” ~ Boston Transcript, 1923 quoting American food scientist Samuel C. Prescott

And last, but not least, from the frontline…

“We have joined in many a march in Old Virginia, when the days were long and hot, and the power of the soldiers to endure the fatigue of the march… was greatly enhanced by an opportunity to brew a cup of coffee by the wayside.” ~ Captain R.K. Beecham (1838 – 1920), Gettysburg
